Tren Maya is a megaproject that will promote tourism and economic development in the southeastern region of Mexico. Construcciones Urales, the subsidiary of Azvi in the country, has become one of the main players in the development of the new railway infrastructures being carried out in this region and has been responsible for the construction of Section 3 (Calkiní-Izamal), on the Yucatán Peninsula. Construction of Section 3 of the Tren Maya, which connects Calkiní, in Campeche, with Izamal in Yucatán. The contract has included the preparation and execution of the executive project to build the 160 km of railway track that make up Section 3, as well as its maintenance for five years. The section consists of 100 km of single track and 60 km of double track. In addition to the installation of 120 km of C-350 type catenary and 2×25 kV, 60 Hz electrification systems, traction power substations from 220 to 440 kV. In addition to highlighting the economic benefits in terms of tourism, by attracting millions of visitors to Yucatán from Cancún and the Riviera Maya, the Tren Maya will also operate as a freight railway, expanding the state’s competitive advantages in manufacturing and reducing the carbon footprint of road transportation. The Tren Maya will be connected to the Tren Interoceánico project, which will allow companies established in Yucatán that import raw materials from Asia to arrive in Salina Cruz and transport these goods through the Tren Maya, to then transform them and export them to the east coast of the United States through the Port of Progreso. This provides the opportunity to turn Yucatán and the southeast into a new frontier with the east coast of the United States. Construcciones Urales has also been responsible for the design, construction, and operation of the sleeper factory for the execution of Section 3 of the Tren Maya. It is the most sophisticated sleeper factory in Latin America, with the capacity to produce 80 sleepers/hour, with a planned maximum output of 1,600/day. Within the Tren Maya project, the Maintenance Base for Section 3 has been developed using BIM methodology, for obtaining the 3D design and construction coordination models, framing them within the asset’s design, construction, and maintenance life cycle, with the aim of ultimately obtaining the As-Built model.
