The state of Michoacan is a strategic corridor for the movement of goods between central Mexico and the industrial and commercial port of Lazaro Cardenas, one of the leading international maritime gateways on Mexico’s Pacific coast. Having high-quality road infrastructure is therefore essential for both the state of Michoacan and the rest of the country. Construction, modernization, maintenance, and operation of several sections of the Patzcuaro–Uruapan–Lazaro Cardenas toll highway. The total length of the road network covered by this project is 361 km, of which 273.2 km are existing roads and 89.3 km are newly built alignments. This is one of the most significant engineering works in Mexico in recent years. It has a length of 64.1 km, with a carriageway width of 12 m, two traffic lanes (one in each direction), and 2.5 m hard shoulders. Modernization of the Patzcuaro–Lazaro Cardenas section began in early 2013. With a range of works carried out along its 266 km length. After calculating the remaining service life of the existing pavement, works involved either the application of a new wearing course with thicknesses between 4 and 8 cm, or a surface treatment known as chip seal using modified bitumen was used. A four-duct conduit for fibre optics was also installed beneath the hard shoulder to support an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), improving user safety in an area with low population density, particularly in the Sierra Madre region. Finally, four toll plazas were modernised, including the construction of administrative buildings, two restrooms per plaza, replacement of all toll booths, and upgrading of toll system installations.
